#HerWrite2Read is a HER DEAR DIARY INITIATIVE basic literacy project designed to impact underprivileged girls in Northern Nigeria with basic reading and writing skills. There is a high illiteracy level in Northern Nigeria whereby teenage girls and girls under the age of 10 lack basic reading for writing skills. In most cases these girls are enrolled in schools within their communities but these schools are not equipped to impact a child with the requisite literacy that enables a child advance his or her education for the purpose of pursuing a career.
In most cases you can hardly tell an enrolled child from an un-enrolled one because they both lack basic reading and writing skills. This is a problem that has crippled and ravaged the Northern society for so long that it is a major contributor to the backward and poor state the North finds itself. As a result, young girls are the most vulnerable whereby they fall victim to cases like child marriage, poor health, diseases and gender based violence GBV, illiteracy, poverty and a bartered self-esteem.
There is good news, because something can be done to change the narrative for the better. In response to this, HDDI is currently running a literacy project – #HerWrite2Read to help underprivileged young girls develop reading and writing skills. This is a great step in providing a lasting solution to the illiteracy endemic that has ravaged Northern girls for so long. We can’t achieve this alone, we must work hand in glove with decision makers, leaders, corporations, NGOs, Government etc to achieve this.
HDDI employs a constructive approach in its teaching methods which is a productive opposite to rote memorization. We use their environment and surroundings – what they see and hear to approach their learning regime by making mental associations which favor long term assimilation and retention. Our aim is to harness abilities that are some worth latent in these girls as a result of the lack of qualitative education and academic curricula available to them. Hence capacity building, problem solving, and deep learning regimes are utilized.
HDDI adopts what it calls 24/7. 24/7 is a time scale lesson plan that stands for 2 days, 4 hours in a week.
Days: Saturdays and Sundays
This time scale plan is designed to eliminate drabness and monotony which can be counter-productive. The lessons include an introduction of a new topic on the first day and a continuation (application and evaluation stage) on the second and last day. A lot of take home assignments that will occupy the girls for a week until the next meeting are given as home work. This is aimed at developing problem solving skills in the girls.
